The Empire of Fiumea is a micronation located in southeastern Michigan. The mainland is located in southeastern Michigan, the entirety being located in a medium-sized subdivision. The nation also has numerous claims across the world, including Antarctica's Elephant Islands.
"Fiume" comes from the Italian word for river, simply being "fiume". The second part of the name, "-a", comes from Latin suffix "-ia", a suffix having restricted application in various fields including the names of diseases, place names, and various loanwords from Latin such as "militia".
The Fiumean historical system considers all years before 1783, when the nation's modern-day land was annexed into United States of America, which had just officially won its independence. Thousands of years before the creation of Fiumea, the land it now takes up was settled by the Potawatomi tribe, who were part of the Algonquian family of Amerindians. The first European to visit the territory of modern-day Fiumea was the French Étienne Brûlé, who began his expedition from Quebec City and traveled as far as the Upper Peninsula. After this the area became part of Louisiana, a large province of New France. In the 1750s territorial disputes between the French and British empires helped start the North American theatre of the Seven Years' War. As a result of the Treaty of Paris, the French ceded all of their North American possessions east of the Mississippi River to the British. The natives of the area weren't happy with the way the British were treating them, which resulted in Pontiac's War, which lasted three years. Some British forts in Michigan were taken, many of which in the general region Fiumea is located in. During the American Revolution, much of the local European population, who supported American independence, rebelled against the British; however they, with the help of local tribes, continually attacked forts in the region and conquered Detroit.
The territory which makes up Fiumea was annexed into the United States of America in 1783, after the Treaty of Paris. During an unknown date presumed to be in the mid-to late 1800s the area which makes up Fiumea now was incorporated into a family farm which took up the entirety of the subdivision mainland Fiumea is located in. The history of Fiumea was relatively uneventful until the 1990s, when the head of the farm decided to give up much of its territory less useful for farming. This territory reduced the farm's size eightfold but lead to the creation of a new subdivision. The areas that modern-day Fiumea claims as its mainland quickly became popular with the subdivision's youth and adolescents due to its more isolated nature of the area; quickly forming several conflicting groups and small squabbles in the area, though work has been made, especially during the era of Fiumea, to unify them. On April 14, 2016, Emperor Lans I went to the modern-day capital and declared Fiumea as a "very autonomous dependency of the USA". He was coronated in a small ceremony on May 16 that same year. Lans I's policy has been relatively peaceful and colonial, focusing more on colonialism and gradual assimilation opposed to military takeovers. In the future, Lans plans on continuing the colonial policy and his unification plans among the factions in the Fiumean territories. He also plans on instituting a lower house, political parties, and a democratically elected prime minister who has some power, but not as much as the monarch himself.
The Empire of Fiumea is currently an absolute monarchy. The government of Fiumea is currently in a provisional state, however, with plans for reform in the future once the population of the Empire increases. The Emperor is the head of state and figurehead of the Empire, having central authority over all of the decisions his other peers in the government make, being able to approve or veto them at will.
Despite the government's seemingly dictatorial nature, this is only a provisional government until the population increases. Reforms are planned for the future in order to make the government more democratic and less authoritarian. The first planned is a provincial governorship system based off of the Ottoman Empire's Beylerbeys, localized in Fiumean English as "Miranhs", based from the Persian name for the title, mir-i miran. The Fiumean Miranhs will have largely autonomous power over the provinces, though the Emperor will be able to override any decisions they make considered to be unfair or overall not worthy of becoming actual legislature.
After the miranh system is stable, the position of prime minister is planned to be added. The prime minister of Fiumea will essentially be the Emperor's greatest advisor, being more powerful than the provincial miranhs but lesser to the Emperor. The Prime Minister is able to pass or veto decisions made by the miranhs before they make it to the Emperor, essentially making them have to get through two governmental officials instead of one. Executive decisions made by the Prime Minister have to get through the Emperor, and, if it is a provincial decision, through that province's miranh. Political parties will be added as well through this reform.
Despite being a hereditary absolute monarchy, the policies of Fiumea are very liberal for the most part. For one, Fiumea is a secular state, meaning that there is no official religion. Besides this, Fiumea also recognizes the rights of all genders, races, and sexualities. The policies of Fiumea in general are based off of the ones in much of Western Europe; specifically the Nordic countries.
Fiumea also has a strict anti-fascism policy as well. The government of Fiumea will never ally or recognize the independence of a fascist state, no matter whether they are a micronation or a macronation. Unlike much of Europe, Holocaust denial is legal, going along with the free speech laws of Fiumea, however in Fiumea Holocaust deniers are looked down upon.
The Empire of Fiumea had done no diplomacy with any other micronations until the 27th of May, 2016 shortly after the Torland-Richardtopia annexation crisis, when Richard I threatened the Torlandic state with annexation. Emperor Lans I stepped in the day after, warning Richard I of Richardtopia that he had broken a part of his own legislature; the law passed on May 19, 2016, vetoing the previous law banning all diplomacy with Communist or Socialist micronations.
Lans decided to call Richard out for the law he had broken; something that was never mentioned in the discussion over the original threat to Torland. Theo I of the former principality of Auburn also joined in as well on the side of his Richardtopian ally, and later Anfinn I of the Faroe Islands joined the situation on the side of Fiumea. The conflict ended without any real major changes besides Richardtopian Empire and Auburn agreeing not to threaten any more nations, at least on the MicroWiki.

The Empire of Fiumea also has numerous claims that it doesn't officially own, per say. The Empire of Fiumea claims the remote Tetepare Island, a Pacific Island also claimed by the macronation of the Solomon Islands. It also lays claim to the Ducie Island, which is an uninhabited British Overseas Territory. The Bajo Nuevo Bank. is another claim, disputed between Colombia, Jamaica, Nicaragua, the United States, and Fiumea. Yet another controversial claim is the Bir Tawil, which is claimed by numerous other micronations, but by no macronations. The last of Fiumea's earthly claims are Marie Byrd Land, once again claimed by no macronations, and Antarctica's Elephant Islands, which are claimed by the United Kingdom but not actually owned by them. The Empire of Fiumea also claims all of the moons of Jupiter as its own territory; at least the ones that are actually solid.
