The Imperial Republic of Serpens, alternatively referred to as the Serpentine Kingdom, is a revolutionary micronational endeavour and sovereign neocultural republic built upon a syncretic political philosophy that is a unique expression of anarchistic and medievalist principles rooted in socioeconomic separatism and classical pagan virtues. The Republic itself is comprised of nomadic groups and autonomous territories mostly concentrated in the Pacific Northwest of North America. Founded on the last night of Lupercalia, the Republic is firmly built upon the rebirth and revival of ancient wisdom and traditions.

Etymology

The word Serpens (the Serpent) is the name of a constellation in the northern hemisphere. Latin for snake, wyrm, or dragon. The story of the naming of the Republic is called the Cor Serpentis (Serpent's Heart), and essentially relates the story of a wise dragon who lived within the seaside cliffs on the coast of Serpens and taught sorcery, music, poetry, painting, metallurgy, alchemy, astronomy, and other strange sciences to three knights of the realm.

Governance & Politics

The Imperial Republic of Serpens has several distinct levels of governance ranging from participative citizens' councils (local self-determination), to the confederal Imperial Senate (civic republicanism), and the coregency (elective monarchy). Local assemblies, open to those citizens age 17 and above, determine the course of their respective autonomous regions. The noble Houses of Serpens have little impact on day-to-day governance except for within the Imperial Crown Tribunal, an aristocatic & meritocratic assembly that hears claims and disputes for the four thrones. The Senate airs and discusses issues of intraregional importance, is a forum for consultation of the four regents, and is an important platform for the networking of the Imperial guilds.

While the monarchy itself is highly symbolic, the role of the four kings and queens is largely pragmatic - due to the fact that the Tribunal is convened to elect the four with the greatest honor, intelligence, and wisdom. Politically, the Republic functions as an autarchist social republic by combining an anarcho-Monarchist view of the state and authority, a market socialist view of economics and social organization, a classical republican view of civic virtue and federalism, a civil libertarian view of culture and society, and a medievalist view of aesthetics and chivalry.
