The The Sovereign Republic of Maharlika or simply Maharlika is a micronation, in Southeast Asia, comprising of many snippets of land across the island of Luzon and the islands of Kalayaan claimed by the Republic of The Philippines.
It is a successor to Zunia and Libertia and was founded May 25, 2015 at 9:00am. It was originally going to be a new nation, separating itself entirely from Zunia, however, it was rejected otherwise and continued the stem of micro-nations starting up from the fictional state of Kidnadia. Libertia was re-organized into Tagalaskaya on December 2015 and Maharlika in June 2016
The micro-nation stemmed from different origins: family-based, classroom-based and imagination-based making linguistically, culturally and socially diverse. The modest and basic economy is based on service-based businesses, delivery and notaphiliy
The Maharlikan political system is a non-partisan republic, which rely on Government and Opposition coalitions for political challenges. The executive branch is led by the Pangulo and the Deputy Pangulo. Along with the Tagapagsalita-Kalihim, they lead the Direktores (ministries) for the Legislative and Executive branches in their endeavors. The Judicial branch of the country is led by the Pangulong Mahistrado.
According to the "Classification of Micronations Index" (as of April 22, 2016) the country is a Fifth World Nation according to the Boodlesmyth-Tallini System and 4/5 in the Linden System. It is currently collating information for a result on the Democracy Index of the UN.
The name Maharlika came from the word maharddhika in Sanskrit. In Malaysian and Indonesian, it has evolved into merdeka which means "freedom". Maharlika was a noble feudal warrior class in Tagalog barangays, which can be considered also as the "head class" of the freemen. Through time, Maharlika in the nation came to mean both
The Republic was originally a number of entities before it became what it is today. It was first Kidnadia, an imaginary role-playing, utopian republic ruled by children. At the same time, the Kingdom of Evergreen and the Republic of Knowledge also thrived as family-based and class-based micronations respectively.
The State of Limuco, the Republic of Science, and the State of Kalayaan descended from these nations and formed a confederation in the summer of 2015 in an attempt in unification. All entities then were absorbed by the Republic of Science in October 2015. The Republic then transformed into the State of Libertia, a community-type micronation.
Elementary Legion Era (December 2015- March 2016)
The Elementary Legion Era began in February 2016 when Prime Minister Corpus, Pangulong Basuel and Chief Marshal Regala prompted the creation of the "Legion" which served as a "head military junta" for the then Republic of Libertia. They were able to gain support from their educational institution (San Sebastian College) and from some locals in Batangas Province.
The Legion soon came to comprise of the entire inner-circle of the original members and after careful deliberation by the Legion heads and a democratic vote, it was soon decided that the Legion is to become the "secret police" of the country and a democratic election is to be held to decide the rulers of the country. That is why most citizens call the government, "the Legion" from its original roots. Around this time period, the Chief Minister, Pangulo, Representatives of the Legislature from Manila, Palañag (or Parañaque), and Caloocan were elected to form the very first fully elected government in the history of the micronation. It soon went to work, proposing relatively minor laws, creating sketches for the army, bureaucratizing the nation and beginning the media of the nation. Three major breakthroughs came out of this period, such as: the creation of the "Enquirer", the official publication of the country, the materialization of the first tax policy (or trust fund, for charity), and the acquisition of new drill weapons.
The country then transformed into Tagalaskaya in December 2015, creating a more nationalistic agenda for the country, through "the remembrance of its roots". After March 2016, as the Elementary Legion has already separated ways in preparation for the next phase in the lives of the original founding members, Pangulong Basuel issued Decree No. 56, reforming the government for the Secondary Legion and granting emergency powers for him to keep the nation from inactivity and collapse.
Secondary Legion (June 2016-Present)
The Secondary Legion began in June 2016, under Decree. 61. This decree reinstates the democratic process in the country and swore in the first government officials in the country. Under the regime, numerous laws were passed in the federalization and decentralization of the different state services, such as education, taxes and healthcare.
As of current affairs, the country has already produced it's first website and is currently working on creating a national roadway system and a national nautical and aeronautical agency for exploration and economic purposes.
The country is (as described by L.D. 14 or E.D. 78, otherwise known as the National Basic Law) a semi-presidential, directorial, constitutional, federal democratic republic under the absolute supervision of the Pangulo with consent of the Konsehalang Pambansa. This vague and complicated system is the result of days of bargaining between the 3 founding members and 4 subsequent members. Over the months however it has been described in one sentenced used by the Pangulo, "I lead, I have a co-leader, I have a council, I have a parliament, which keeps me in check while I become dictatorial".
There are currently no political parties in the country, and is instead compensated for by groupings known as Government, Independent and Opposition. These groupings act as de facto political parties and influences voting patterns in both the Parliament and the populace.
