History
The Kingdom of Talossa was founded in 1979 by Robert Ben Madison (later styled King Robert I), as a constitutional monarchy consisting of Robert's second-floor bedroom. The word talossa derived from a Finnish word for "inside the house".
In 2004, due to injustices on the part of Robert, the Republic of Talossa issued a Statement of Independence, which accused Robert of being a tyrant, amongst other things. A Provisional Governing Council was set into place, which ruled until the Constitution was ratified in 2005.
In 2005, Chris Gruber was elected president.
In 2006 Dieter N Vercaria was elected president.
Geography
The Republic consists of five provinces:
- Cézembre, an island off the coast of France;
- Florenciâ, the smallest province, named for a former monarch of Talossa;
- Maricopa, the largest province in terms of area;
- Maritiimi, the province with the longest coastline; and
- Pórt Maxhestic, the southernmost province.
Of these, all but Cézembre are part of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The Republic does not lay claim to the Kingdom's provinces of Atatürk (which contains Abbavilla, the Kingdom's capital), Vuode annd Mussolini, or its southern territory, Pengöpäts. According to its official website, the Republic is located "about 90 miles north of the Chicago Loop. Talossa lies along the shores of the Talossan Sea near the meeting points of three rivers: the Menomonee, the Kinnickinnic and the Milwaukee."
Demographics
There are 36 citizens in the Republic of Talossa.
Language
The Talossan language (El Glheþ Talossán) is a constructed Gallo-Romance language created by Robert Ben Madison for the Kingdom and, subsequently, is used in both the Kingdom and the Republic.
In the Republic the language is kept alive by the Talossan-Language project, which built an online dictionary English-Talossán, Talossán-English; and the formation of la Icastolâ, the School of Talossan Language in the Talossan Academy of Arts and Sciences that was established 9 August 2005 with the "The Talossan Academy of Arts and Sciences Act" approved by the Parlamînt.
