The Republic of Petorio (Spanish: República de Petorio, Petorian: Republico de Petorio) is a federal republic. Its executive branch is ruled by the president, Kalvin Koolidge. Its legislative branch is ruled by Parliament, divided into a bicameral system composed of the Senate and House of Commons. Petorio turned 1 on September 26, 2009

History
The Republic of Petorio was founded on September 26th, 2008, by then 20-year-old Kalvin Koolidge and friend Barry Ortiz. Kalvin was very poor at the time, so he was forced into adopting the flag of Trinidad and Tobago instead of buying an expensive custom flag to fly in his front yard and territory of Petorio. That flag was used from September 26th, 2008 to March 4th, 2009. Even though 2008 is the "official year of founding", Petorio was originally founded in 2006.
Constitution
Petorio's constitution was written on 26 September, 2008 and it declared Petorio as a sovereign nation separate from the United States. On October 1st of that year, the 2 friends decided the permanent location of Petorio would be their homes and the surrounding areas. Two more territories joined the republic later on.
The constitution was officially ratified by the then all 4 Provinces of Petorio on October 10th, 2008. These 4 provinces swear to enforce the rules of the constitution which are simple civil rights and government settings. Kalvin Koolidge was elected president of Petorio on October 13th, 2008, and was inaugurated on October 15th. He won 11 votes to 5 (11 votes for him, 5 for Barry Ortiz).
On June 2nd it was announced that a constitutional reform would take place in June. The constitution will be either rewritten or heavily amended. It was originally set to be rewritten by June 25th but several members of the government left the nation delaying the reforms to August
Territory
The 2006 territorial claim was Kalvin's and his friend Barry Ortiz's houses, and the 2007 territorial claim was an enormous New England claim; however, in 2008, the 2 friends realized that the 2007 claim wasn't realistic, so they brought the claim back down to their homes and surrounding areas. Major territorial changes include The Charwood expansion of Janurary 6th, 2009, and the acquiring of Acadia on February 10th.
On October 25th, 2008, Petorio claimed a new area of land claiming it as "Beachfront Territory". It was located in Ontario, Canada.
On February 10th, 2009, a new province called "Acadia" was added to Petorio. Acadia was acquired from the former nation of West Acadia which gave up its lands to Petorio following a two-week conflict. On February 15th, 2009, Petorio was elected to the chair of the GUM. On February 20th, the "twin cities" of Bendale and North Lawrence were recognized by the federal government and provincial government in Acadia.
Diplomacy
On November 30th, 2008, Petorio joined CUNT (Countries United in National Trade). From December 1st, 2008, to the present, Petorio has been trying to improve its foreign relations with other micronations on this website. So far, Petorio has formed alliances with the CUNT nations (Stigistan & Scientopia), the UNITED nations (Danburnia and The Land of Toz Boz), the Ohio Empire, the Federal Republic of St.Charlie, the Kingdom of Camuria, the Democratic Duchy of Francisville, the Imperial Republic of Murrayfield, Finismund, the Kingdom of Praugsia, Erusia, the Cheslovian Federation, the Empire of New Europe and Flandrensis. Petorio, with 9 allies, would be considered a very peaceful micronation.
Miscellaneous
On March 4th, 2009, a new flag was adopted for Petorio. The original flag, Trinidad and Tobago's, is still flown across the nation. The new flag is an altered version of the first that features 6 stars, one for each Province and Territory that makes up the Republic.
On March 28, 2009, the Republic of Petorio participated in Earth Hour. The electricity in all government buildings was off from 8:30pm to 9:30pm EST. On April 22nd the Republic celebrated Earth Day. The president announced that all government buildings will shut off electricity, unlike Earth Hour, for 3 hours.
On November 28th, 2008 President Kalvin Koolidge urged anyone who is interested in Petorio to become a citizen so there is a fair amount of people to vote in upcoming elections, which included February 2009's Palmyra Creek Mayoral election which Adam Allam won.
The 2nd State of the Nation Address was delivered in early August prior to the annexation of Petorio's 7th Province. On October 1st, 2009 Vice President Barry Ortiz resigned from office and was succeeded by the appointed Misty Miller who is the first Socialist Vice President.
Land
Petorio consists of four properties located within the continental United States and two properties located within continental Canada. They comprise of a total area of about 3.02 square kilometers.
The lands are owned by Kalvin, Barry, and other founding citizens.
Provinces & Territories
- Charwood - Holds Kalvin and an apartment complex. This is also where the president moves to if he wins an election. Charwood is split into 2 counties: Capital and Prince Drake county.
- Cooper - Holds Barry and a national forest. This is the most tensious border with 2 VERY patriotic Americans living at the PET/USA border.
- Little Italy - Holds a residential home and a bakery. It was originally unknown why this territory entered the union, has been fairly important in recent months.
- Keystone Territory - Holds a trailer park and a national park. This is the largest and most populous province; it holds about 105 people. Keystone is split into 3 counties: Palmyra, Agua Brilliante and Terrance county.
- Beachfront Territory - Holds about 100 people and a small bay. It is about the same size as Keystone Territory. Beachfront is split into 3 counties: Bay, Beachfront and Ontario county.
- Acadia - Holds about 90 people, a field and many private houses. It is the second-largest province in terms of population and size ranking (behind Keystone Territory in population and Beachfront Territory in size).
Economy
The current Petorian economy crashed on October 6th, 2008, and slowly recovered until November 7th, 2008, when the economy was declared "fixed" by the nation's official website. The cause of the crash was low circulation.
The currency used in Petorio is the Petorian Dollar (ie. $4.00 PED). Generally, $1 PED = 25¢ USD. This was, however, brought up from $1.00 PED = 10¢ USD in September.
Climate
The Petorian climate is often cold for 4 months, mild for 6 months, and hot for 2 months. Petorio is located entirely in the Snow Belt and gets heavy snow in the winter and snow/rain mixtures in the early Spring. Currently (Autumn), Petorio is usually cool with temperatures in the 10s - 20s. Rain is not currently uncommon in Petorio. The last major storm occured during the last week of June. Recently the temperature in Petorio has been in the 20s.
The Charwood Tribune
The Charwood Tribune is Petorio's national newspaper. It was started on December 4th, 2008, after a MicroWiki poll was closed, and the majority of the voters voted for an official newspaper. Production was suspended in May and will resume in September before Petorio's first anniversary.
Culture
Petorio is considered by some remarkable for its diverse culture. Within its 4 provinces and 2 territories, it has American, Canadian, Italian, Hispanic, African and even Egyptian groups as citizens. Petorio's national animal, which is used as a symbol on things such as currency, is the Siberian Husky, which is what the president owns. Petorio has named the Red Maple Tree as a national tree because it grows in several provinces and territories in Petorio and the surrounding area. Other national symbols of Petorio include the famous adopted flag of Trinidad and Tobago it claims as its own, its coat of arms, its national anthem and its national food. Some cultural figures include Joey Russo among many others, as he owns the Italian bakery located in Little Italy.
Government
Petorio is headed by a President that comes to office via elections. The 2008 election was the latest, and had Kalvin Koolidge (11) vs. Barry Ortiz (5). Kalvin won, and passed the first law banning incandescent light bulbs on October 15th, 2008. This law went into effect on January 1st, 2009. Another law concerning Hanukkah was voted NO by the citizens (unofficial results) and Parliament (official results). Petorio has five political parties: the Petorian Independent Party (which Barry Ortiz founded), the Socialist Party of Petorio, the Petorian Democratic Micro-National Socialist Party, the Petorian Libertarians and the Communist Party. There are also several other positions in the Republic of Petorio, including Vice President, Parliament, and Governors.
Parliament
The Petorian parliament consists of 2 houses: the Senate and the House of Commons. They are the law-making branch of government. The December 20th election was the latest. The Parliament meets at least once a month to discuss the making of new laws in Petorio.
Senate
The Senate house of the Parliament is the upper house. It holds 5 members.
House of Commons
The House of Commons of the Parliament is the lower house. It holds 6 members.
National Holidays
Petorio has 11 holidays listed on its website currently. They are Independence Day, Constitution Day, Thanksgiving, Halloween, Christmas, New Year's, Lunar Festival, Anthem Day, Valentine's Day, Earth Day and President's Day. On December 21st, 2008, it was voted on by Petorian citizens to decide if Hanukkah should become a national holiday, and they decided it shouldn't.
Official Languages
The republic has 3 official languages at a federal level. Though some other languages are spoken in Keystone Territory (as it has a multicultural trailer park) including Polish, French and German, the 2 official languages are English Spanish and Petorios own conlang, Petorian. The Spanish version of this article is located here. Only 3 citizens speak fluent Spanish. Other citizens speak it poorly or not at all.
